Many people state that great things come in small packages. Enter the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA. Designed to be the smallest Crossover/SUV available from the brand, it is certain to draw a lot of attention. Thankfully, we can say that most of that attention will be positive. The GLA-Class looks handsome from all angles, and has a interior similar to what’s been seen in the A-Class and CLA-Class.
Shod with the standard 18-inch wheels, the GLA has a more flowing look than its larger sibling, the GLK. The design is mix of SUV and swoopy couple, in an effort to create a stylish end product. At 173.9 inches long and 58.8 inches tall, the GLA is roughly 4 inches smaller and about 8 inches lower than the GLK. The front end features a prominent grille with a Mercedes-Benz center star, up-swept headlights, and the now signature hood vent humps. The side profile is coupe-like in appearance, think CLA or CLS style. The rear end is standard crossover sport styling with a nice hatch that will make loading easy. There isn’t much to dislike, the overall style and look says premium without trying too hard.
The drive-train consists of what we know is available in the CLA, the 2.0L turbocharged 4 cylinder mated to the seven-speed dual-clutch auto-manual transmission. Producing 208 horsepower, and 258 Ft. Lbs. of Torque, it helps the GLA accelerate from 0 to 60 MPG in about 6.4 seconds. Start/Stop Functionality with an ECO mode is standard to help fuel efficiency. Top speed is 145 MPH. The GLA can be had with front wheel drive, or Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive.
The interior features many similar styling cues that are found in the CLA 4 door coupe. The round center vents are there, along with the center infotainment stack. The dual-zone climate control is located below the center stack. The navigation screen is still a separate screen on top of the center stack vents on the dash. Attention Assist (drowsy driver detection system), a radar-based collision prevention assist system, and the brake assist system are some of the standard features. Collision Prevention Assist Plus, blind spot and lane keeping assist systems, and Parktronic With Park Assist auto parking device are newly available options. The materials look nice and interior on the whole is a wonderful place to spend time.
The GLA promises to be a wonderful offering in the entry level, premium small crossover market. Competing with the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, it sets itself aside by offering nice styling, lots of nice features, a nice interior, and hopefully competitive pricing.
