2015 CLS First Mercedes-Benz To Get 9 Speed Automatic In USA

9G-Tronic will debut in the 2015 CLS in the United States. Slated to debut in the fall in the W219 CLS, the 9G-Tronic will eventually spread to almost all Mercedes Benz models. The transmission is capable of being used in RWD or AWD applications, enabling the transmission to be quite versatile for MB. Currently the CLS uses a 7 speed automatic transmission, so it will be interesting to see how the new 9G-Tronic effects performance.

Recently caught testing on public roads, the new 2015 C Class has a much greater road presence than the 2014 Model. Designed with similar styling clues that are found on the new W222 S-Class, the new vehicle has moved upmarket in terms of styling.

The additional length will be used to help differentiate the new C Class from the CLA. Additionally, it will help it to compete with larger F30 3-Series and New Audi A4. new c class mercedes-benz caught testing

Mercedes Releases New 9 Speed Automatic In Europe

E350 Blutech 9 speed transmission in Europe

Premiering in the Diesel E350 BluTech, the new 9 speed transmission replaces the previous 7 speed transmission. Named 9G-Tronic, the unit has been designed and built in-house by Mercedes-Benz. The new transmission aids in getting the E350 Blutech 44.4 MPG, up from 42.8 MPG with the previous 7 speed transmission. The new transmission doesn’t make the acceleration to 60 MPG any quicker, but it does aid in making significant increase in the City Cycle for fuel consumption.

Spied: S600 Pullman – Maybach Replacement

Spied during pre-production testing, the S600 Pullman will represent the most luxurious offering from Mercedes-Benz. Riding on a stretched W222 S-Class chassis, the S600 Pullman is designed to offer it’s occupants in the rear the utmost in luxury.

Sporting unique body work such as a more classy grille, wheels, and different sheet-metal in the rear quarters, the Pullman will ooze substance and style. The extended wheelbase is designed to offer the rear passengers roughly six more inches of space. This stretch will also enable the rear occupants to recline the lounge style rear seats for additional comfort.

Pricing is likely to be around $200,000 for the “basic” Pullman model, with prices rising to about $300,000. Will this model be more successful than the slow-selling Maybach? Only time will tell.

2014 S63 AMG – 0 to 60 MPH in 3.9 Seconds

s63 AMG 4Matic Brakes

577 Horsepower will sit underneath the hood of the new generation W222 S63 AMG. Along with 664 pound feet of torque, the newly reworked M157 5.5L V8 BI-Turbo engine from AMG uses a air-to-water intercooler and direct injection to exact as much power from the mill as possible. The 577 horsepower figure helps to achieve the 7.9 lbs/hp power-to-weight ratio that will ensure this S63 will be rocket-ship fast.

Weight savings was also a crucial engineering aspect in designing the W222 AMG models. The complete outer skin of the S63 is made of aluminum. A unique, light-weight and high performance two-piece braking system, along with lightweight forged wheels and LI-ON battery aid in the 200 pound weight loss compared to the previous W221 generation S63. The spare wheel recess is made of carbon fiber, which saves 9 pounds versus constructing the peice using a metal material. Acceleration is blistering, at 3.9 seconds to reach 60 MPH, while top speed is limited to 186 MPH.

Embracing AWD, AMG has fitted the new S63 with their performance version of 4Matic, ensuring all of the power produced hits the ground efficiently. In S63 guise, the 4matic system will normally send 67% of the engine’s power to the rear wheels. This will help to ensure that the system retains a rear-wheel drive feel, while offering prodigious grip at all times. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has three modes: C (efficiency), S (Sport), and M (Manual). In the S and M modes, the AMG sports exhaust systems opens up two flaps in the rear silencers to ensure the engine sounds brilliant.

Truly a superb machine, the new W222 S63 AMG promises to have superior build quality, world-class performance, and extreme luxury. All mated to a interior and exterior that have been given the AMG treatment to enhance the visual appeal of this special AMG model.

Mercedes Benz to use QR codes to aid emergency workers in efficiency

Workers can scan the QR sticker to instantly retrieve vital vehicle information in emergency situations

Workers can scan the QR sticker to instantly retrieve vital vehicle information in emergency situations

Whenever occupants are trapped inside a vehicle, time is of the essence. Due to this, Mercedes is developing a system that will aid emergency workers in rescuing trapped occupants. The system will consist of QR barcode stickers attached to vehicle (usually by the gas cap area) that the emergency workers can scan with a smart phone that has network access. Once scanned, the codes will  automatically pull up vehicle blueprints which will point out the the location of the hydraulic lines, air bags, electrical components, crumple zones, and major vehicle components to the rescuer. This quick access to vital information will greatly aid emergency workers in being able to rescue trapped occupants in emergency situations.

Rescuers have to currently rely on hard copy rescue sheets or to access the vehicle information from a online database. The main benefit of the QR system will be time savings. A quick scan and all the pertinent information will become visible on the worker’s smartphone.

Speedy rescue of accident victims: A new Mercedes-Benz initiative: QR code that can save lives

Stuttgart, May 23, 2013

Stuttgart – When every second counts: with a small yet effective innovation, Mercedes-Benz wants to make the rescue of accident victims safer and swifter. In future a QR code, which can be read by smartphones and tablets, placed on Mercedes-Benz cars, will provide a rescue map for every vehicle type, which can be shown on the device’s display. This chart contains all the information necessary to rescue any injured occupants speedily.

This Mercedes-Benz innovation makes use of the rescue sheets developed by the ADAC, the German Automobile Association, and which are already provided by all automakers for every one of their vehicle models. The sheets show firefighters, police and paramedics the design details they need to know in order to use the rescue shears effectively, for example. The rescue sheet, specific for each vehicle type, also informs about the location of the airbags, the battery, the tanks, electric cables, high-pressure cylinders and other components – in the case of hybrid models the location of the additional batteries and high-voltage cables, too. This information can save lives, because in an emergency every action counts and every second is precious.

However, in many cases rescue workers have to do their best without a rescue sheet, either because the driver neglected to carry one in the car, or because the rescuers cannot find it in the car. There are different proposals for the best location for the rescue sheet. Most favour the sun visor.

If there is no rescue sheet on board, then the rescue workers have to identify the accident vehicle with absolute certainty – something that does not always lead to the correct result in the presence of severe accident damage and missing model identification. In such cases only a telephone inquiry based on the number plate can help.

This Mercedes-Benz innovation, on the other hand, offers – in almost all cases – a swift and reliable way to a vehicle-specific correct security identity card – and can do this without requiring any action on the part of the driver. As from this year all new vehicles from Mercedes-Benz will be provided with two stickers with a so-called QR code. This square symbol with black and white sectors is often used by magazines, for instance, to direct readers via internet to a specific web page. Thanks to an app, QR codes can be read by every smartphone and every Tablet equipped with a camera.

The Mercedes-Benz QR codes identify the vehicle reliably, make fundamental information about the vehicle visible immediately and automatically direct to the website with the specific rescue sheet – generally a matter of only a few seconds. In order to make it easy to find the label with the potentially lifesaving QR code, Mercedes-Benz places one on the fuel tank flap and the other on the B-pillar on the opposite vehicle side. For it seldom occurs that both these parts are badly damaged at the same time in an accident, and they are furthermore easily accessible from the outside.
Further benefits of the innovative QR code solution from Mercedes-Benz:
Rescue workers do not need to identify the vehicle themselves and navigate through Internet pages for this.

Suitable for all vehicle types, both with conventional and with alternative drive systems.
The stickers with QR code can be easily retrofitted.

All automakers can continue to update their own rescue sheet links themselves and thus use the QR system to advantage, because Mercedes-Benz has waived the right to a patent registration in order to make the system available to everyone.

The Williams F1 Team and Mercedes-Benz announce long-term engine partnership

Brixworth, May 30, 2013 — The Williams F1 Team (Ticker: WGF1) and Mercedes-Benz are pleased to announce the signature of a long-term engine partnership from the 2014 Formula One World Championship season onwards.

Under the terms of the agreement, Williams will be supplied with a Mercedes-Benz Power Unit (Internal Combustion Engine plus Energy Recovery System) by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) based in Brixworth, UK. Williams will continue to manufacture its own transmission.

The 2014 regulations will set the sport’s engineers the challenge of completing a 300 km race distance on a fuel load of just 100 kg. To do so, teams will switch from naturally aspirated 2.4 litre V8 engines to 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged hybrid Power Units. To achieve power outputs comparable to current levels from the new Power Unit will require a 30% increase in energy efficiency.

This step forward will be largely achieved through an Energy Recovery System (ERS) that will be able to deploy ten times more energy than the current KERS. The new ERS will recover energy from both the exhaust turbine and the rear axle, as well as deploying energy back to both.
These new technical developments will offer significantly greater opportunities for technology transfer from Formula One to real-world applications in areas such as battery technology, turbocharging, energy recovery and combustion efficiency.

Speaking about the new engine partnership, Williams F1 Team Founder and Team Principal Sir Frank Williams said; “I’m delighted to announce our new association with Mercedes-Benz for the 2014 Formula One season and beyond. Mercedes-Benz has been one of the sport’s most successful engine suppliers and we believe that they will have an extremely competitive engine package. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Renault for their continued hard work since we renewed our engine partnership at the beginning of the 2012 season. We have enjoyed a strong relationship that has resulted in much success over the years, including powering us to winning ways once again last year at the Spanish Grand Prix.”

Claire Williams, Deputy Team Principal, said “The announcement of this partnership is exciting news for Williams. Securing the right engine supply partnership is a key milestone in the implementation of our strategy for long term success. We are also pleased to conclude this agreement early in the season and we very much look forward to working with Mercedes AMG HPP in developing our 2014 race car.”

Andy Cowell, Managing Director of Mercedes AMG HPP, commented: “It is a very proud moment for everybody at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains to announce the start of this new partnership with the Williams F1 Team. Williams is one of the sport’s iconic names and we are very excited to be working together towards a successful future under the new regulations. A further positive is that this new agreement provides Mercedes-Benz with the long-term stability of supplying our works team and at least two partners from the 2015 season onwards, following the conclusion of our relationship with McLaren at the end of next season.”

Toto Wolff, Executive Director of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS, concluded: “The proud heritage of Williams and the company’s commitment to technological excellence make it a perfect long-term partner for Mercedes-Benz under the new powertrain regulations. It is a win-win situation for both HPP and Williams, which will ensure HPP is able to supply at least three teams on a long-term basis under the new regulations and could open interesting new perspectives for technology transfer. We look forward to enjoying much success together over the coming years.”
