A Mercedes-Benz Classic – The 190E 2.3-16V Cosworth

We revisit one of the most iconic Mercedes-Benz Models of the past, the 190E 2.3-16V Cosworth.

Mercedes 190E Cosworth EVOII

The 190E 2.3-16V was a special homologation model designed jointly by Mercedes-Benz and Cosworth for the German DTM racing series. This special model was unveiled to the public at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. Having just set a number of world speed records at the oval Nardo tack in Italy, the 1983 unveil was the perfect time to introduce this top-tier 190E model.

A key element that allowed the 190E 2.3-16V to capture the world speed records was the impressive Cosworth developed motor. The engine was made of light alloy, featured dual overhead cams, and 4 valves per cylinder. A Bosch K-Jetronic injection system, rounded out the fuel system. The engine, a derivative of the standard 2.3 4 cylinder Mercedes engine, the 2.3 16V made 185 BHP and a 177 ft. lbs. of torque (167 BPH, 162 torques for USA engine). Impressive figures for that time, allowing the 190E 16V to hit 62 MPH in 7.5 seconds on to a top speed of 143 MPH.

A true classic today, the 190e battled against the BMW M3 during its production. With a 0.32 drag coefficient, a Dog-Leg transmission, self-leveling hydraulic suspension, and electronically controlled limited slip differential it was the most sporting Mercedes-Benz at the time.
